NACAS Statement on Chauvin Decision
Earlier this week, jurors in Minnesota found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty on all counts in the murder of George Floyd that took place last May. This verdict comes as a sigh of relief for the Floyd family, the Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) community, and all those who have been organizing in protest of police violence and systemic racism. This is a step forward, but there is still much work to be done to address the issue of reckless policing, bring justice to all families whose loved ones have been killed by police violence, and heal collective, ongoing trauma from systemic injustice that impacts everyday lives on campus and beyond.
At NACAS, we are focusing on how we can create safe spaces for members who identify within one or more marginalized groups, increase the production of content created by people of color, and ensure that our recruitment, hiring, and onboarding efforts for staff and volunteers are welcoming and equitable. We are also committed to continuously providing access to education that helps you transform and restore your campus operations in more just and inclusive ways.
